On 30 May 2004 Barb emailed me about a "Reward of Merit" card found with Nellie's things. On the front of the card it says it's to "Amelia Caddic" from the teacher, H. A. Axtell. One the reverse someone has written "Mary Jane Briggs Card".

Barb contacted me with scans of this to see if I could find out if these people were related.
The answer was yes. "Amelia Caddic" is the daughter of Catherine Jane Bowder and John Zuck. Catherine is sister to my ancestor, Susan Bowder. John Zuck died bet 1850-1851 and Catherine was remarried to Isaac Caddick on May 03, 1851 in Boone County, Illinois. The 1860 Federal census for the Isaac Caddick family shows Catherine's four children from her previous marriage, and 2 children with Isaac, all using the Caddick name.
Amelia was age 13 in 1860, so it's a guess that this reward of merit is from anytime between 1855-1863.
And H. A. Axtell? I can't be sure but if it's the same man, but there is an Axtell family in the northern DeKalb County Township of Genoa, on the Boone County border. The oldest child in the house is named Hannibal, age 18, occupation: teacher. He and his parents were born in New York.
